Juventus came from 3-1 down to beat AS Roma 4-3 in one of the games of the season so far in the 2021/22 Serie A campaign. Champions Inter Milan, meanwhile, beat Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio 2-1 to continue their quest to retain the title.
Tammy Abraham nodded in his eighth league goal of the season to give AS Roma the lead against Juventus in the 11th minute of their Sunday night game at the Stadio Olimpico. Seven minutes later, Federico Chiesa cut in from the left before squaring the ball to Paulo Dybala, whose effort from outside the box beat Rui Patricio and brought parity.
The Giallorossi retook the lead in the 48th minute after Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s shot deflected off a Juventus body and looped over a stranded Wojciech Szczesny. Lorenzo Pellegrini put daylight between Roma and their opponents five minutes later with a sensational free-kick.
Just when Jose Mourinho thought his side had the points in the bag, the Bianconeri struck back. A cross from the right from Alvaro Morata was headed in by Manuel Locatelli to make the score 3-2. Two minutes later, Morata again caused problems for the Roma defence inside the box and, after his shot was blocked, Dejan Kulusevski scored the rebound to bring Juve level.
Juventus, then, took the lead in the 77th minute through Mattia De Sciglio, as he capitalized on a mistake by Chris Smalling before beating Patricio at his near post.
Roma were awarded a lifeline in the 81st minute when Matthijs De Ligt handled the ball inside the box, gave the opposition a penalty, and walked off with his second booking. Szczesny, however, saved Pellegrini’s spot-kick and Juve held on for a memorable win.
At the San Siro, Inter Milan beat Lazio 2-1 to retake the top spot from city rivals AC Milan. Inter took the lead in the 30th minute through Alessandro Bastoni. A corner from Alexis Sanchez was cleared by the Lazio defence but only as far as Bastoni, who thumped the ball in from outside the box to give the Nerazzurri the lead.
Ciro Immobile brought Lazio level just five minutes later when he freed himself from Milan Skriniar and touched a long pass from Danilo Cataldi past Samir Handanovic before tapping the ball into an empty net.
The Slovakian centre-back made amends for his mistake by heading in a cross from Bastoni in the 65th minute to restore Inter’s lead.
Simone Inzaghi’s men protected their lead until the referee blew his whistle for full-time to go a point clear of AC Milan at the top of the table, having played a game fewer.
