The Blaugrana are attempting to sign right-back Noussair Mazraoui from AFC Ajax, reports 90min. They have reportedly held talks with the Morocco international regarding a free switch at the end of the season, given his contract at Ajax is entering its final six months. Meanwhile, as per AS, the Spanish giants are also ready to bring the defender in six months earlier and are prepared to offer Sergino Dest to Ajax in exchange.
Losing Mazraoui to Barcelona amid a title charge could significantly weaken the Ajax squad. However, the option to re-sign Dest – a player who is no stranger to Erik ten Hag’s system, having been a key member of his squad until last summer – could appease the Dutch giants. Signing off on the deal would also mean that Ajax doesn’t lose Mazraoui on a free six months later, although how the two clubs work out the valuations of their respective assets remains to be seen.
Another possible hitch in the proposed deal is the fact that Dest is attracting interest from elsewhere. Bayern Munich have been linked with the United States of America international in the past, and are keen to sign him to bolster their ranks – as per journalist Gerard Romero. Dest came close to joining the Bavarians in 2020 before signing for Barcelona. Meanwhile, Bayern signed Bouna Sarr instead, who has rarely featured for them since then.
Furthermore, Marca reports that Chelsea, too, are interested in Dest due to his versatility; the American can play on either flank and could be a short and long-term solution to the Blues’ left-back woes, following Ben Chilwell’s injury. To sign him, the Premier League outfit will have to part ways with 36 million euros, but Chilwell’s early return could derail the potential move.
