The former Rangers striker also assisted Peter Harley’s opening goal as the Men of Steel ran riot in the Tilak Maidan.
Owen Coyle’s Jamshedpur FC climbed to second in the Indian Super League table thanks to a 4-0 thrashing of Odisha FC. Summer signing Greg Stewart assisted the opening goal of the game and then scored a first-half hat-trick as Coyle’s side ran riot against the high-flying Odisha.
Jamshedpur’s captain Peter Hartley headed in the opening goal in the 3rd minute of the match from Stewart’s corner. The Englishman rose above his marker and steered the ball across the goalkeeper to give his team the lead. A minute later, Stewart scored his first of three.
The Scotsman shaped up to shoot from his left, 25 yards away from goal, but instead dummied back on his right before launching a piledriver into the top corner.
Stewart’s second of the night was of a similar ilk – the attacker deceiving Kamaljit Singh from a free-kick some way away from the goal. Instead of getting the ball over the wall and then back under the bar, Stewart curled it around, beating the Odisha custodian at his near post.
A fourth in the 35th minute – and Stewart’s third – put the game beyond any reasonable doubt for Jamshedpur. The 31-year-old collected the ball close to the halfway line and charged goalwards. Odisha’s Victor Mongil came across to cover the angles, preventing Stewart from cutting inside on his favored left. Instead, the attacker shifted the ball to his right and beat Singh with a powerful, driven shot across the goal.
Despite having the points in the bag within the first 35 minutes, Jamshedpur custodian Rehenesh TP had to be alert to prevent Odisha from clawing their way back into the game. The 28-year-old made decent saves on either side of the interval from Aridai Cabrera and Lalhrezuala Sailung to maintain his clean sheet. Meanwhile, Jonathas missed a late, free header for Odisha, and Nerijus Valskis did the same for Jamshedpur, as the game finished 4-0 in favor of the latter.
