Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta played five years under Arsene Wenger between 2011 and 2016, before hanging his boots and starting his coaching career as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The Spaniard took up the duties at Emirates in 2019 and has won Community Shield and the FA Cup in his debut season.

Arteta was speaking to the press ahead of their game against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United when he talked about the hopeful return of Arsene Wenger to the Gunners board one day. Arteta had a conversation with the 71-year-old during the premiere of the “Arsene Wenger: Invincible” film.

The 39-year-old expressed his admiration for his former boss, who spent 22 years at Arsenal before calling time on his management career in 2018. He told he would to see the Frenchman back at the club in a decision-making capacity, and said that having him close personally will be a big help for him.

“Hopefully we can bring him close because I think he would have a great time just seeing the environment that he can create around him when he’s around this place, because of the respect, admiration and love that everybody at the club has for what he’s done and for what he represents as a person in this club.

I cannot tell you now, but what I can say is that I would like him to be much closer personally to me because I think he will be a great help,”

    Arteta said.

Arsenal got off to a horrible start this season, losing their opening three games in a canter. However, they have remained unbeaten across all competitions since losing 5-0 at the Etihad to Manchester City until they encountered Liverpool at Anfield. They are within touching distance to a position in the top four, just three shy of fourth-placed West Ham.

Their new signings have delivered pretty impressive performances, with Ben White and Martin Odegaard doing a fine job until now. However, the real game-changer for the side has been Aaron Ramsdale, who has settled in seamlessly and has produced magnificent saves time and again, many of which proved to be match-winning for the Gunners.
