Disney Star and Viacom18 emerged as the two power players at the bidding process for the e-auction of the Indian Premier League’s media rights for the next five-year cycle spanning 2023 to 2027. The five-year roster of up to 410 matches will be televised by the Disney-Star collaboration, while Viacom18 will be offering the matches live on its OTT platforms. Reflective of the changing landscape of how the viewers consume content, the digital rights have gone higher than the financial moolah attracted by the TV rights. While Disney Star, who owned the previous rights for TV and digital both, have…

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced pay hike in monthly pensions to former cricket players and umpires registered under its wing. The board has taken note of the financial conditions of India’s ex-international and domestic men’s and women’s cricketers and contemporary match officials. It is understood this was a longstanding demand made by the Indian Cricketers Association, seeing the financial state of a lot of the ex-players and umpires, who depend largely on income from officiating games during a domestic season and often depend on other jobs to sustain their livelihood off season. The BCCI has confirmed…

South African fast-bowling great Dale Steyn believes Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back to his very best. For Steyn, the veteran India quick has regained a level of confidence, which he was perhaps lacking a couple of months before. Steyn’s remarks for Bhuvneshwar came after his terrific spell in the second T20I versus his countrymen in Cuttack on June 12. Relishing the new-ball duties, Bhuvneshwar rocked the visitors hard with a three-wicket burst inside the powerplay. His exploits gave India a sniff to potentially win despite posting a less-than-ideal 148/6 as he eventually finished with figures of 4 for 13 off 4 overs. In many ways, it was a continuation…

On a dry Multan surface, Pakistan faced stutters from an unexpected challenge in the form of West Indies skipper Nicholas Pooran, but the hosts’ overall strength eventually propelled them past the visitors again in the third ODI on June 12.  Pooran’s gentle part-time off-spin bowling troubled a settled Pakistan batting unit for curious reasons as his four for 48 reduced the hosts to a precarious 117/5 at one stage. Collapsing from 88 for one, the Men in Green, however, stood on their feet again and posted 269/9 by the end of the innings. This, thanks largely to allrounder Shadab Khan’s magnificent 86 off 78 balls at No.7. The Pakistan vice-captain led his team’s recovery and allowed them…

Day 1 of the two-part e-auction for the media rights of the Indian Premier League on June 12 concluded with the league fetching over an unprecedented 42,000 Indian crores for the next five-year cycle. With multiple corporate giants involved in the bidding process, the collective sums attracted by the TV and digital rights for the Indian market have scaled a never-seen-before height, making the tournament over 10 billion dollars rich as a property. And this is only from Day 1. The final amount of the television and digital rights for the Indian market alone may well go deep towards the 20 billion…

A career-best score of 190 made on Day 2 of the Trent Bridge Test was personally marked as a thing of joy by Daryl Mitchell, who, however, also felt the pinch of dropping two critical catches when England’s turn came to bat. Following his hundred in Lord’s with another daddy effort with the bat, Mitchell helped propel the tourists to an impregnable 532 all out in the first-innings. But his two drop catches denied the Black Caps a chance to put England under irrevocable pressure, as they could eventually end play at a safe-looking score of 90 for 1.  Credit: ECB Trying to give words…

Sri Lanka claimed a consolation win to end the three-match T20I series against Australia on the back of their skipper Dasun Shanaka’s incredible knock in the final hour of play in Pallekele on June 11. Shanaka blasted an unbeaten 54 off 25 balls to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat to help the Lankans Lions avoid what seemed at one stage a certain 3-0 series whitewash. Walking in to bat at No.6 with Lankan Lions precariously placed at 92/4 in the 13th over chasing a stiff target of 177, the right-hander took the Aussie bowling unit to all corners through an innings glint with five fours and four sixes.  Criticised…

Sri Lanka has handed comebacks to Danushka Gunathilaka, Niroshan Dickwella, Dhananjaya de Silva and Bhanuka Rajapaksa in their enlarged 21-man squad for the ODI series against Australia. The selectors have also kept a nice mix of youth and experience by offering a maiden call-up to U19 star Dunith Wellalage.  Credit: AP 28-year-old right-arm seamer Pramod Madushan is another fresh face part of the playing contingent for the five-match home series. Allrounder Lahiru Madushanka and speedster Asitha Fernando are two others recalled by the selection panel. The think-tank, however, has left out veteran pacer Nuwan Pradeep in a surprising omission. Others making way for the comeback men and new…

The first day of the second Test between England and New Zealand at Trent Bridge ended up being full of misery for the hosts as they toiled hard on the field with not much success. What added to their frustration was an incredibly rare incident, which saw the ball taking a dip into a spectator’s pint of cider. As a result, England’s bowling for the rest of the day remained toothless, with the ball offering little to no help. England sent the visitors in to bat after winning the toss but had a hard time picking wickets. They did make…

For a while in their stiff run-chase of the 212 target, South Africa felt like second-favourites against India until David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen combined to form one of the most explosive stands one will see. The duo took the game away from the hosts and helped the visitors take a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series in Delhi on June 9.  https://twitter.com/cricketaakash/status/1534945561211592705 At 81/3 in the back half of the ninth over in the chase, Proteas stared down the barrel, with the asking rate climbing up to 11 an over. But a memorable stand of 131 runs between Miller and van der…
