On Firday, former South African all-rounder David Wiese was included in Namibia’s squad for the T20 World Cup to be held in UAE and Oman, starting October 17.
Wiese last featured in international cricket for South Africa back in 2016. But he has been busy playing and performing in multiple domestic T20 tournaments around the world since then. The 36-year-old cricketer is now all set to resume his international career for African associates Namibia, who are making their T20 World Cup debut.
Led by Gerhard Erasmus, the Namibians also feature young leg-spin all-rounder Nicol Loftie-Eaton and left-arm paceman Ruben Trumpelmann. The entry of Ruben gives Namibia a third left-arm fast bowling option alongside JJ Smit and Jan Frylinck. They’ve also included uncapped Michael van Lingen to their squad.
Namibia are part of Group A of the preliminary round at the T20 World Cup and will take on Sri Lanka, Netherlands and Ireland on October 18, 20 and 22, respectively.
Impressing one and all with his bowling on debut in the limited-overs home series against South Africa, promising off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana has been included in Sri Lanka’s provisional squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Theekshana, the 21-year-old tweaker from Jaffna, bowled brilliantly in his maiden ODI & T20I outings versus the Proteas in Colombo. With Theekshana’s variations yet to be deciphered by the opposition teams, the selectors probably feel that he can prove to be a real handful at the forthcoming ICC event.
However, SL will only confirm a final squad of 15 with adequate reserves at the end of the three-match T20I series against South Africa. The series culminates on September 14.
As part of preliminary Group A, Sri Lanka will face Namibia, Ireland, and the Netherlands on October 18, 20 and 22.
Only the top two teams from each of the preliminary groups will make the Super 12 stage.
