Olivier Giroud got off the mark for Rossoneri in their 4-1 win over Cagliari. The Frenchman’s former Chelsea teammate Tammy Abraham also netted scored his first goal in Italian football during AS Roma’s away game at Salernitana.
Missing several key men, Milan head coach Stefano Pioli went with an unchanged eleven against Cagliari from the one which beat Sampdoria on opening day. Olivier Giroud started up top in place of the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic while Rafael Leao, Brahim Diaz, and Alexis Saelemaekers provided support.
The Rossoneri started well with Leao running in behind the Cagliari defense in the opening minutes, only to be denied the first goal of the game by a last-ditch block from Andrea Carboni. Nevertheless, the Rossoneri took the lead in the 12th minute when Sandro Tonali curled in a stunning free-kick into the top corner from just outside the box.
Cagliari hit back instantly, and Alessandro Deiola levelled the scores with a looping header past Mike Maignan in goal. Milan retook the lead in the 17th minute through a dubious goal, as Leao’s shot hit Diaz in the back with the deflection enough to take the ball away from Boris Radunovic in between the posts.
Giroud added some distance between the two sides with his brace before the interval. The Frenchman scored his first in the 24th minute after being teed-up inside the box by Diaz – a simple side-foot finish into the corner. His second came from the spot in the 43rd minute after Kevin Strootman was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty area.
AS Roma matched AC Milan in terms of the goals scored after beating newly-promoted Salernitana 4-0. Lorenzo Pellegrini opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho’s side before Jordan Veretout put the finishing touches to a well-worked move after some deft interplay between Tammy Abraham and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Abraham scored his first goal in Italian football in the 69th minute before Pellegrini added gloss to the scoreline with his second of the night.
Roma and Milan joined Inter Milan, Lazio, and Napoli as the only teams with a perfect record in the league after two games.
