Defeating Dutch champions and Adidas in collaboration with the Marley family have released a third kit paying their tribute to the legendary reggae singer.
The jersey has details of Marley’s iconic song Three Little Birds. At the back of the jersey near the collar, three little birds are sitting on Amsterdam’s Andreas crosses, giving a subtle reference to the iconic song. The kit will be worn in Ajax’s European matches along with their iconic red and white home shirt.
The story of Ajax and Marley goes back to August 2008, when the DJ played his famous song after a friendly against Cardiff City. Since then, the song has stuck with their fans as they made it their own. Three Little Birds song was heard at the Amsterdam Arena, and the fans consider it a sign of hope.
The kit has subtle references to Marley, starting with the three little birds on the back of the collar to the stripes of red, yellow and green on the sleeves.
The base colour of black simply enhances the design and gives it a very classy touch.
“I am beyond touched that Ajax has taken Three Little Birds and made it their anthem. Stories like this warm my heart and show how impactful songs like Three Little Birds can be. Soccer was everything to my father. To use his words: football is freedom”,
says daughter Cedella Marley.
The range also includes track top, track pants, sweater, t-shirt and Samba footwear. It will be available from August 20 onwards on adidas.com and several stores, including Ajax fanshops.
In may, Ajax have paid tribute to their fans by handing them a piece of history. The Dutch Champions melted their league title into 42,000 stars which were given as a gift to the season ticket holders. The club decided to thank their fans for their relentless support even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
