On Friday, an unnamed Everton player has been arrested by the Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of committing child sex offences.
Owing to legal reasons, the name of that player has not been disclosed by the police yet. If reports are to be believed, the player is 31 years of age, married, and is currently living in a £2million house. In a raid carried out by the detectives, several items have been seized.
Sources close to the case have claimed that the police are bringing some serious charges on the player. This news has also sent shockwaves across the football fraternity. This is not the first incident of a renowned football player being charged with pedophile offences.
Adam Johnson, a Premier League winner with Manchester City, was sentenced to six years in prison in 2016, for sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
“Several items were seized by cops. He was questioned in relation to very serious offences,”
one source claimed about the incident, as per quotes in Daily Mail.
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that the player is currently on bail. In a statement, they wrote
“Officers arrested a man on Friday July 16 2021 on suspicion of child sex offences. He is on police bail pending further enquiries.”
Everton releases statement
Everton have confirmed in a statement that they have suspended a first-team player involved in a police investigation. They have also said that the club will extend their support to the authorities regarding this case.
“Everton can confirm it has suspended a First-Team player pending a police investigation. The club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time,”
The Toffees will soon travel to the United States, where they will take part in the Florida Cup. Their Premier League campaign starts on August 14, with an away trip to St. Mary’s Stadium to take on Southampton. Under a new manager in Rafael Benitez, they will be hoping for a top-six finish in the upcoming season.
