AS Roma have completed their second major signing of the summer. The Giallorossi have signed Uzbekistan international Eldor Shomurodov from Serie A side Genoa. Reports indicate that they will target Danish midfielder Thomas Delaney next.
The Uzbekistan international becomes Jose Mourinho’s second major signing this summer, following the capture of Portuguese national team goalkeeper Rui Patricio.
On signing for Rome, the 26-year-old expressed his delight and highlighted his desire to play for a ‘big’ club, which he believes was the reason behind the smooth and fast transaction between the two clubs.
“Joining Roma represents a huge step forward in my career – I will do everything I can to show I deserve this opportunity and to demonstrate what I can do at one of the biggest clubs in the world,”
“The speed in which this deal was agreed is testament to my desire to be able to join up with the coach and my new teammates and get to work as soon as possible.”
Shomurodov said.
Shomurodov joined Genoa last season following a three-year spell with FC Rostov in Russia. The 26-year-old scored eight goals in 31 appearances for the Serie A side and was one of their better players throughout the campaign. Following his move to the Roman club, Shomurodov will wear the number 14.
Despite signing Shomurodov and Patricio, and paying what remained to Atalanta and FC Dallas for the permanent transfers of Roger Ibanez and Bryan Reynolds, respectively, AS Roma are expected to continue to splurge in the transfer market. The Giallorossi are targeting a central midfielder and are likely to turn their attention towards Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Delaney, following their failure in the pursuit of Granit Xhaka of Arsenal.
Bild reports that Roma have turned to their second-choice target in the transfer market, Delaney, after failing to reach an agreement with Arsenal over Xhaka. The Gunners rejected Roma’s approach and are instead expected to tie the Swiss international down to a new contract.
