On Monday, St Lucia Zouks, one of the six prominent Caribbean Premier League franchises, went through a transformation of its name. The franchise will now be called St Lucia Kings, having announced a new team identity and logo.
The team name is now in line with the Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings , which is also owned by the KPH Dream Cricket brand, but still captures the essence of St Lucia through its name and the colours of the national flag.
“Saint Lucia Kings is more in line with the positioning that the KPH Dream Cricket brand has, and we believe that the time was right for us to merge the sister brand and its inherent values with the mother brand,”
Satish Menon, the CEO of St Lucia Kings, stated in a media release.
The St Lucia Kings feature some of the big names from cricket world in their playing squad and support staff. The team is coached by former Zimbabwe player Andy Flower, with South African batsman Faf du Plessis being their captain. They also have former West Indies captain Darren Sammy as assistant coach and mentor for the CPL 2021.
“I love the logo and I love the new name “It’s a pleasure to be associated with the Kings Franchise and I truly hope that the name can inspire our players to play like the true Kings that we are.”
Sammy said.
The Kings are the third IPL franchise also to own a CPL team. Red Chillies Entertainment, which owns the two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders, had bought the T&T based Trinbago Knight Riders back in 2015. And earlier this week, the CPL received another massive boost when inaugural IPL winners Rajasthan Royals bought a majority stake in Barbados Tridents, who will now be known as the Barbados Royals.
