Varane’s current contract with Real Madrid ends in June 2022 and he has not spoken with Los Blancos regarding a contract extension. The France international is one of the top targets for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who is looking to fortify the defence for the upcoming season.
The Red Devils are eager to sign the player as early as possible, considering if Real set up a realistic asking fee. There are definite signs of encouragement for the Red Devils as Real Madrid is also considering cashing in on him rather than leaving for free next season.
The 28-year-old joined Los Blancos way back in 2011 from RC Lens, and since then, he has not looked back. Varane, under the tutelage of several top defenders, has grown into one of the best centre-back of this generation. He, alongside Sergio Ramos, has been one of the best defensive duos in world football in recent times. Now with both of them set to leave will leave Madrid a bit shorthanded for the upcoming season.
During his time at the Spanish capital, Varane won the La Liga title thrice and four Champions League titles and a Copa Del Rey. He was also pivotal in France’s World Cup triumph in 2018. Therefore he will leave a long legacy at the Santiago Bernabeu if he decides to join Manchester United this summer.
United was also linked with Villareal centre-back Pau Torres considered a major alternative for Varane. However, as talks with the Frenchman gather momentum, the Red Devils focus on roping him this summer. Sources from ESPN suggest that United has had a discussion with the representatives of the French defender, but there is no set timeline on when the deal will be finalized.
