Inter Milan were left shell-shocked by the departure of Antonio Conte earlier this week, with the Italian deciding to step down after disagreements with the club hierarchy. The Nerazzurri have made their move to appoint his successor.
According to several reports, Internazionale are close to appointing Simone Inzaghi as their next head coach. Former Lazio manager is expected to take over from Conte at Inter, with an official announcement likely to confirm the inevitable soon. Inzaghi stepped down from his role at Lazio on Thursday, May 27 – the club announced on social media.
Simone Inzaghi – a former Lazio player and brother of AC Milan legend Filippo – took the job as Lazio’s head coach in 2016. The Italian was initially appointed as the interim manager when the Biancocelesti sacked Stefano Pioli during the latter stages of the 2015/16 campaign. However, he would soon return to the job on a full-time basis after a short episode that saw Marcelo Bielsa take the Lazio job before resigning days later.
Under Inzaghi, Lazio enjoyed some of their best spells of the 21st century. The capital side won the Supercoppa Italiana twice in 2017 and 2019, as well as the Coppa Italia in the 2018/19 season. The Biancocelesti qualified for the UEFA Champions League as well, in 2020, after a season of challenging rivals Juventus and Inter Milan for the Italian crown.
Overall, Inzaghi was in charge of just over 250 games for Lazio. He won 134 of those matches and recorded a win percentage of 53.39. He is expected to sign a contract with Inter Milan to replace Conte at the helm.
Conte, who led the Nerazzurri to their first league title in more than a decade, stepped down from his role after disagreements with the club hierarchy. The Italian has since been linked with a move to Real Madrid, where Zinedine Zidane has tendered his resignation.
