Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski scored his 41st goal of the season in Bundesliga. With this, he created history by breaking the 49-year-old record of Gerd Muller, who scored 40 goals in a single season in 1971-72 and eventually won the Bundesliga with the Bavarians.
Robert Lewandowski, who has now scored 40+ goals in all competitions for the sixth season in a row, couldn’t have asked for a better ending to the season. Bayern, who had already won the league title, took on FC Augsburg in the final game of the season at Allianz Arena.
Augsburg, who escaped relegation with just three more points, conceded an own goal in the ninth minute. Serge Gnabry scored in the 23rd minute. Joshua Kimmich and Kingsley Coman followed him on the scoresheet. The visitors, however, scored twice after some lazy football by the Bavarians even though it was nothing more than just a drop in the ocean.
Lewandowski, who missed more than half a dozen of scoring chances, didn’t seem to find the back of the net and was set to miss out on the record until the very last minute of the game.
The visiting keeper Rafal Gikiewicz spilled the ball after a shot by Leroy Sane in the last minute of the game, and it was Lewandowski with the striker’s instinct who was quickest to pounce and score in the finishing seconds of the game. The striker was finally relieved after being denied by the visiting goalie in several instances of the game.
The 32-year-old Polish striker has 48 goals in all competitions for Bayern this season and is also the golden boot winner. With 277 career goals for FCB, he is now second on the list of all-time highest scorers in the Bundesliga, behind only Mueller’s 365.
