Wes Morgan and Christian Fuchs were two very important components of the Leicester 2016 fairytale. The club has announced that the pair will leave the club following the conclusion of this season.
Morgan and Fuchs will leave the club this summer, five years after helping them win the league via an incredible campaign. Meanwhile, long-serving midfielder Matty James will also leave the Foxes at the conclusion of this season. James has been a member of the Leicester squad for nine years, though he missed out on their fairytale season due to a long injury.
Morgan arrived at Leicester City in 2012 from Nottingham Forest and grew into an important player for them over the years. He was named the team’s captain upon his arrival – a position he continues to hold. The Jamaican defender led the Foxes to Premier League in 2014 before capping a stunning title-win in 2016.
He lost his place in the starting eleven over the past year, with the emergence of Caglar Soyuncu and Wesley Fofana, but was on the pitch to celebrate their recent FA Cup win. Morgan leaves the club having made over 300 appearances for them. He captained the team in the Champions League as well, during their maiden season in the competition.
Leicester picked up Christian Fuchs on a free transfer ahead of their 2015/16 season. Ten months later, Fuchs would have a Premier League winners’ medal around his neck. The Austrian left-back signed for the Foxes from Schalke 04 but was initially snubbed by new manager Claudio Ranieri – Fuchs being a signing made by his predecessor.
However, he slowly won over the Italian and was a constant presence in the first-team midway through the season. He was one of the standout performers of the 15/16 campaign.
Fuchs had to wait five years before getting his hands on another trophy. His – and the club’s – drought ended last week when they beat Chelsea to win the FA Cup. The Austrian, however, made only nine appearances this season for the Foxes, with opportunities hard to come by over the last three years due to the emergence of Ben Chilwell and later, Luke Thomas and James Justin. He made over 100 appearances for Leicester during his six-year stay at the club and scored three goals.
