MCFC secured their sixth win on the trot thanks to a 2-1 win over Chennaiyin FC which took them to the top spot in the league table. Lallianzuala Chhangte and Greg Stewart scored for the Islanders on either side of the half-time break.
Petar Sliskovic gave the visitors the lead at the Mumbai Football Arena before Lallianzuala Chhangte equalised just four minutes later. Greg Stewart then scored the winning goal in the second half to win the contest.
Chennaiyin’s opening goal came from a mistake by Mourtada Fall, who was caught on the ball before giving it away straight to Julius Deker. He instantly found Sliskovic’s run, and he calmly slotted the ball past Phurba Lachenpa as the visitors broke the deadlock.
The lead did not last long, though, as Fall redeemed himself for his error and headed Ahmed Jahouh’s freekick back across the face of goal. A lurking Chhangte picked it up and rifled the ball home with his right foot to restore parity in the contest.
The Islanders then completed the comeback in the second half when Jorge Diaz’s back-heel flick caught the Chennaiyin defence wrong-footed. It fell in the path of a charging Stewart, who smashed it home from close range to score the winning goal that would take Mumbai to the top of the table.
Elsewhere, at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, NorthEast United ended their run of 10 consecutive losses and picked up their first win of the season against ATK Mohun Bagan.
Striker Wilmar Jordan scored the only goal of the game in the 69th minute to put the hosts ahead. Their defence then stepped up and maintained the discipline to deny the Mariners any point from the game, which now makes it a possibility for them to drop out of the top three in the Super League standings.
