Seven-time Champions League winners AC Milan came up on top in a virtual knockout against RB Salzburg, beating the Austrian side 4-0, thanks to a brilliant performance from World Cup-winning French centre-forward Olivier Giroud, who was involved in all four goals scored by Stefano Pioli’s side.
Giroud netted a brace and also registered two assists as he tantalised the Salzburg defence. Bosnian attacking midfielder Rade Krunic scored a goal in a rare starting appearance as AC Milan finished second in their group, only behind 2021 champions Chelsea.
Milan would have been knocked out had they not gained a positive result against the Austrians, but Pioli showed no signs of nerves, taking down their opponents with ease.
Meanwhile, SL Benfica put six past a listless Maccabi Haifa in a spectacular performance that saw the Portuguese side gain a 6-1 victory. Goncalo Ramos was the first name on the scoresheet, scoring in the 20th minute.
Portuguese winger Rafa Silva continued his spectacular form with another goal against the Israelis as he advanced his push for a spot in his national team for the World Cup, which begins in less than three weeks.
Silva has 11 goals and four assists this season, including five goals in the UEFA Champions League. Centre-back Nicolas Otamendi was also impressive, as the veteran showed defensive solidity while also registering an assist.
The Portuguese side finished on top of the group ahead of Paris Saint-Germain in stunning fashion, only edging the Parisians in away goals scored. PSG, who also scored a 2-1 victory over Juventus, could now potentially face the likes of Bayern Munchen, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City, all riveting encounters in their own right.
Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund played out a 1-1 draw against FC Copenhagen away from home. Thorgan Hazard, who started at left-back yet again, scored the opener, only for Arnar Haraldsson to equalise a few minutes later, as the two sides were locked at the end of 90 minutes.
