Bayern Munchen regained their top spot in the Bundesliga after a lengthy absence by their standards after a 6-2 thumping of Mainz in a high-scoring gameweek in Germany.
The Bavarians put six past a listless Mainz defence. Sadio Mane accumulated two assists and a goal despite poorly missing a penalty, while Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, as well as youngsters Mathys Tel and Jamal Musiala all scored.
Eric Maxim Chupo-Moting was brilliant, the Cameroonian scoring once and also assisting Musiala in a beautiful one-two. Sven Ulreich also faced a penalty but was untroubled as Jonathan Burkardt sent his effort well over the bar.
The Nmeha brothers ran riot on VfL Bochum as Wolfsburg eased past the relegation-threatened side. Felix, the younger of the two Nmecha brothers, scored twice, while Lukas registered an assist in a 4-0 battering.
The 4-0 scoreline perhaps flattered the Bochum side, who conceded five big chances, three of which were not converted. Wolfsburg, who will be happy with the victory, will nevertheless be disappointed about the fact that they missed out on a chance to recover their goal difference.
Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen suffered a crushing defeat against RB Leipzig, who have been doing very well under new manager Marco Rose.
Timo Werner sealed three points for his side after an early first-half goal from the in-form Christopher Nkunku put Leipzig in front. Nkunku’s goal puts him on level terms with Niclas Fullkrug of Werder Bremen, who is also on nine goals in the Bundesliga.
Niclas Fullkrug was the difference between Werder Bremen and Hertha Berlin as the hosts finally converted a chance to secure three points on a night where Bremen registered 16 shots at the Hertha goal.
Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham produced yet another sensational performance. The 19-year-old Englishman broke the 1-1 deadlock early in the second half of the game against Eintracht Frankfurt to take his side to third place on the league table.
