Thailand Women benefited from a rain-abandoned last round-robin fixture between Bangladesh and the UAE on Tuesday to romp through the Asia Cup 2022 semi-finals.
Bangladesh, the defending champions, needed a win in their last round-robin encounter to displace Thailand from the fourth position in the eight-team points table and begin favourites against the UAE, who had registered just one win from their previous five games.
However, persistent rain forced a draw at the Sylhet International Stadium, with the two teams sharing a point each. As a result, Thailand, who won three and lost as many, edged ahead by a point to Bangladesh after they had won two of their first five matches.
Thailand went down to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in their first two outings, respectively, before registering a landmark four-wicket win over Pakistan. They extended their fine showing with convincing wins over the UAE and Malaysia, respectively and were outplayed by India in their final league game by nine wickets after they had been skittled out for 37.
“Very good experience for us to play with a top-class team. The more games we play, we’ll get more experience,”
Thailand skipper Naruemol Chaiwai had said following the defeat to India.
Thailand are likely to face the six-time champions and former runners-up India in their semi-final clash. India currently occupy the top position in the points table with five wins and a defeat to Pakistan. However, they could be displaced should either Pakistan or Sri Lanka win by a big margin in the final league encounter on Tuesday.
