Neither Bayern Munich nor Borussia Dortmund have been particularly impressive this season, as compared to their usual high standards. The unpredictability is what made the game all the more exciting for the fans who did not know what to expect heading into the game, which is by far the biggest in the Bundesliga season.
Leon Goretzka opened the scoring, firing from distance into the bottom left corner. Sadio Mane and Jamal Musiala combined brilliantly on the overlap before the young German picked out his compatriot, who made no mistake in putting his side in front. He would register yet another assist in the game, this time setting up the in-form Leroy Sane, who also shot from a fair distance, sending the Bavarians 2-0 up.
Nevertheless, Dortmund were looking very good in attack from the outset, as veteran Julian Brandt and Donyell Malen threatened Bayern on a number of occasions. The game took an interesting turn in the 74th minute, as the 17-year-old Yosouffa Moukoko scored to bring Dortmund back in the game.
Even then, Bayern were looking set to capture the top spot, before Anthony Modeste’s equalising header in the 95th minute put a dampener in their plans, as the stadium erupted, much to the disappointment of the Bayern faithful.
Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen registered a scintillating victory over Schalke in the Spaniard’s debut. Jeremie Frimpong carried on his excellent form with two goals in the space of 12 minutes, as goals from Moussa Diaby and Paulinho sealed a 4-0 victory for Leverkusen.
Elsewhere, Hoffenheim missed out on yet another golden opportunity to make their way into the top three, losing 2-1 to Werder Bremen.
Last-placed VfL Bochum thrashed Frankfurt 3-0, while the game between Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig ended in a 1-1 draw. Augsburg and Wolfsburg also played out a 1-1 draw on an eventful Matchday 17.
