Following their difficult and turbulent start to the season, Julen Lopetegui has been sacked by Sevilla from the position of head coach after his side were beaten 4-1 by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. The former Spain manager is now in a strong position to take over as the coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“Sevilla FC have relieved Julen Lopetegui of his duties as first-team coach following our clash against Borussia Dortmund.
It brings an end to a successful period with three magnificent campaigns in which the club achieved their objectives and a fourth season where unfortunately the results have not gone our way, with the club taking five points from a possible 21 in LaLiga,”
the club’s official statement read.
The 56-year-old, however, was well aware of what fate had in store for him after the demoralizing loss last night and he faced the media in the mix zone with that same mindset.
“I have many mixed feelings. It’s hard to describe them.
The first thing that comes to my head and my heart is gratitude towards my club, the city, the team’s fans, my players – and everybody else who works for Sevilla.
We’ve lived through very nice things together and then there is the other sentiment of sadness for leaving a club I love, and I am sure I will get over this situation,”
he said in his post-match press conference.
Despite losing his position, the tactician is now primed to take over as the head coach of Wolverhampton, who are also struggling in the Premier League. They have won just one of their eight matches so far this season while drawing thrice and losing on four occasions. Having collected only six points, Wolves are already scrapping in the relegation zone.
As a result, they parted ways with Bruno Lage on Sunday, after losing 2-0 to West Ham recently. Having scored just three goals in the league all season, Wolves have looked out of ideas in all stages of play and they are now leaning towards the idea of appointing the recently sacked Sevilla manager.
