Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane he is expected to leave the club this summer, with the Premier League clubs interested in his signature.
According to a report by Spanish news outlet AS, the 28-year-old is looking to leave Madrid this summer. He has told his trusted people about his intentions and believes this is the perfect time to leave. His contract is up in 2022, and the club can use this opportunity to derive some money from his sale. Should he remain in Spain without signing an extension, he would negotiate with clubs a free transfer starting from January 2022.
The report also states that Real Madrid are in no hurry to renew Varane’s contract. On the contrary, they consider him to be one of the players who they can sell for a profit in the upcoming summer transfer window. Los Blancos are rumoured to be close to signing his replacement already, with David Alaba set to join on a free transfer from Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, they are also keeping tabs on some of the young defenders who have impressed in LaLiga, namely Pau Torres and Jules Kounde.
At 28 years of age, Varane has a market value of 70 million euros which is the second-highest in the Real Madrid squad behind Thibaut Courtois. His transfer value also makes him the second-most expensive defender in the world behind Juventus’ Matthijs De Ligt.
Varane has been linked with a move to both Chelsea and Manchester United. However, the Frenchman reiterated his focus on his current club in the recent Champions League pre-match press conference.
“My future is clear, I am focused on the end of the season. We are in an intense moment and all our focus is on the matches we have ahead.
The message to the fans is that I am 100 per cent committed to the team. We have challenges that encourage us a lot. I am focused on giving everything on the field.”
he said.
Real Madrid face Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals first leg on April 27. Varane is expected to line up for the home side in defence with Sergio Ramos out injured.
