Indian veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara is in a league of his own, having scored 614 runs in the One Day Cup for his county side Sussex. Pujara has been in sensational touch ever since going to play in the English domestic tournaments after his axing from the Indian Test side. The Indian veteran has scored more than 1700 runs for Sussex across two County tournaments.
The 34-year-old claims his current County cricket assignment with Sussex has improved his skills and that he is enjoying his role as captain of a group of young, bright players. On Wednesday, he had a Q&A session on Twitter where he responded to certain queries from his followers. When asked if his time in the county had helped him get better, Pujara responded, “Of course.”
In the current One Day Cup on Tuesday, he scored 132 runs in a flash off just 90 balls for Sussex, marking his third century for the team. For his county team, Pujara has been on fire.
The Indian stalwart batsman is second on the run-scoring charts, behind Stephen Sean Eskinazi of Middlesex, who has 658 runs to his name in what has been a scintillating season for him.
Apart from the limited-overs format, Pujara shone in the County Championship as he left no stone unturned in a bid to return to the Indian Test side, of which he has consistently been a huge part, after arriving into the scene after current Indian coach Rahul Dravid’s retirement.
The player scored 1094 runs in the Championship in just eight games at a mind-boggling average of 109.40, including a magnificent 231.
When asked by fans about his new attacking approach, Pujara responded by saying that in addition to adding a few more shots to his repertoire, he has also inculcated a certain fearlessness, which has helped him greatly.
It remains to bee seen if Pujara’s stellar white-ball run will earn him a surprise call-up to the Indian ODI side, but his game is certainly entertaining cricket fans around the world.
