Indian Super League side Mumbai City FC have completed the signing of centre-back Rostyn Griffiths on a year-contract, as was announced by the two clubs.
The 34-year-old will be joining the Islanders soon and he has put pen to paper on a contract that will last a year until the end of the Indian Super League 2022/23 season. The Australian joins from sister club Melbourne City. Both the club are owned by the same parent – City Football Group – who are also the owners of Premier League champions Manchester City.
“Personally, this is a new challenge in my life and I’m ready for it. The club’s vision and ambition is a huge factor in helping my decision to come here along with what Des Buckingham intends to build here at Mumbai City,”
Griffiths was quoted as saying in a media release.
The player has enjoyed plenty of success lately and he will be hoping to do exactly that with Mumbai as well. The defender won the A-League Premiers and Championship double in the 2020/21 season and was also a fundamental part of the team’s maiden continental campaign during the 2022 AFC Champions League. He also lifted his second consecutive A-League Premiers title last season with the Melbourne-based outfit.
Griffiths had started his career with Blackburn Rovers who were playing in the Premier League at that point. He then moved to Australia in order to receive more protagonism and game time.
Making his A-League debut with Adelaide United, the 34-year-old has also represented North Queensland Fury and Central Coast Mariners. He had won the 2011/12 Premiers title with the latter as well.
Griffiths has also had previous experience of playing in Asia. He featured for Chinese clubs Guangzhou City and also returned to Europe to play for Dutch side Roda JC before coming back to Australia as a Perth Glory player. Before joining Melbourne City FC, he also enjoyed a stint with Uzbek side Pakhtakor Tashkent in the 2017/18 season.
