Speaking to Sport Bild in March, Robert Lewandowski’s former agent Maik Barthel had stated that for 10 years, Real Madrid was the favourite destination for the player.
“My experience with him and those around him shows that a move to another top international club, preferably Real Madrid, was always the goal,”
Barthel was quoted as saying.
However, since the January transfer window, things have changed within the player’s camp. While Bayern have refused to fulfil the player’s contractual demands, the ex-Borussia Dortmund player Lewandowski has asked the club to listen to offers in this transfer window.
With the news of the player joining the Catalan giants, his former representative hit back at the player by pointing out the hypocrisy.
“Your whole life you want to go to Real Madrid only to maybe end up in Barcelona later? Ok,”
Barthel wrote on Twitter.
The Poland international’s contract at the Allianz Arena expires in the summer of 2023 and the player confirmed last week that he will not renew his deal.
Earlier, Lewandowski’s intentions to leave Bayern this summer, amid reports that Barcelona are ready to offer the Poland international a three-year contract. He was quoted as saying to the BBC:
”I told the club that if an offer comes in, then we have to think about it – also for the club. We have to find the best solution for both sides. I won’t sign a new contract.”
Since joining Bayern in 2014, the current FIFA’s best male player award has won eight Bundesliga trophies while also lifting the 2020 UEFA Champions League.
He has netted 344 goals in 374 games for the Bundesliga champions since his arrival at the Allianz Arena and is the club’s second-highest goalcorer of all time behind Gerd Muller.
Last year, the Polish international also broke Muller’s 49-year record for most league goals in Bundesliga in a single calendar year with 43 goals in 34 games.
