Barcelona considered selling Gavi last summer before adding €1b release clause to youngster’s contract

Midfielder Gavi has been one of Barcelona’s most promising players this season. Ronald Koeman gave the 17-year-old, a product of the La Masia system, his debut in August 2021, and he hasn’t laid a wrong foot since then.

Under club legend and current head coach Xavi Hernandez, the talented youngster has developed into a key member of the first-team squad, almost becoming a constant fixture in the starting XI. After becoming Spain’s youngest international in October 2021, the teenager has also established himself as one of the most important players in the Luis Enrique-led side.

Such being the case, it’s no wonder that Barcelona is frantically trying to finalise a new deal for Gavi, whose present one expires at the end of next season.

However, according to a new report from Diario AS, the Blaugrana were strongly contemplating selling him in the recent past due to the club’s ongoing financial difficulties, something that forced the Catalan giants to let go the likes of Antoine Griezmann, and their greatest ever player, in Lionel Messi.

According to the source, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Everton were all interested in signing the midfielder. However, the Catalans have received offers for the 17-year-old phenom worth over 40 million euros through intermediaries.

Because of the club’s financial situation, management considered accepting a 40-million bid, even though it would have been a divisive move. In the end, the club decided against it and has been working hard to secure him a new deal ever since.

Barcelona director Mateu Alemany: “Gavi wants to stay here. We have been talking for a long time and all parties see Gavi as Barça player for many years to come”, he told Movistar via @ReshadRahman_ 🔵🔴 #FCB

Gavi is expected to sign an extension soon, following in the footsteps of Ansu Fati, Pedri, and Ronald Araujo in committing his long-term future to the club. Notably, the club reportedly will add a 1 billion euros release clause to Gavi’s contract, the same as the aforementioned players. With several promising youth players in their ranks, the five-time Champions League winners will be in expectation to a bright future.
