MI and India’s all-format skipper recently became just the second Indian and seventh batsman overall to amass 10,000 runs in the history of T20 cricket. The six-time Indian Premier League champion reached the milestone in the Mumbai Indians’ recent Indian Premier League game against the Punjab Kings, which they ended up losing by 12 runs.
Interestingly, Sharma was a mere 25 runs away from the huge milestone at the start of his innings against PBKS and reached the mark in no time, with a massive six off South African speedster Kagiso Rabada’s bowling. Nevertheless, he was dismissed off the very next ball.
The Mumbaikar’s long-time teammate and predecessor as captain of the Indian side, Virat Kohli, was the first to reach the epic milestone, having done so in the previous season. Current Kolkata Knight Riders opener and Aussie white-ball skipper Pat Cummins also reached the distinguished crowd just before Rohit.
West Indian legend Chris Gayle was the first batsman to ever breach the 10,000 run mark in T20 cricket, having done so quite a fair while ago. The Caribbean powerhouse still occupies the top spot by a considerable margin, sitting at 14,562 runs in 463 games.
Pakistani veteran Shoaib Malik, who also began his career at around the same time as Gayle, was the second batsman to do so, followed by current WI limited overs skipper Kieron Pollard. David Warner, Kohli and Aaron Finch complete the rest of the list before Sharma.
Rohit is also the third-highest run-getter in IPL history, with 5719 runs to his name. His long-time opening partner Shikhar Dhawan, who added 70 runs to his tally, bringing it up to 5981 runs, sits in the second place as things stand.
However, both Sharma and Dhawan are far behind the magisterial Kohli, who is comfortably on top of the charts, with 6390 runs to his name.
