Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes has been charged for stabbing his cousin during a family party in Amsterdam, which took place last year. The footballer continues to deny allegations and has stayed in jail for two days now.
Despite finding bail to get out of jail, the 29-year-old continues to be in observation as a suspect of this incident. As per De Telegraaf, a member of his family was left seriously wounded with knife stabs after the party. This party took place in a small town called Abcoude, which is situated just outside Amsterdam, the place where he learned his trade as a footballer.
Although the case was registered and the accused name remained anonymous for a long time, it was being reported by De Telegraaf that Promes was the individual. The former Sevilla and Ajax attacker apparently came on to his cousin quite suddenly, and the reasons behind this attack on the individual remain mysterious.
Promes’ lawyer continues to deny the allegations on his client, and have spoken as little as possible throughout the hearings up until now. When asked by the press in Russia about the incident, the footballer said that he focuses only on football and lets his lawyers deal with it.
“It was a shock for everyone, but I am glad I was released so quickly. I can’t say more about it. I’m just as shocked as the rest of the world. It is something from my private life, I cannot say more about it. But now I am free and I think that says enough. It’s nice that the club supports me: not only [manager] Erik ten Hag, but also my team-mates,”
Promes said.
Lawyer Yehudi Moszkowicz is working for the alleged victim of the incident and has said:
“The decision to sue Promes is the only right decision. After taking note of the file, we will also ask the Public Prosecution Service to prosecute the suspect for attempted manslaughter. If necessary, we will go to the Court for that.”
If proven guilty in future hearings, Promes could be finding himself in jail for 24 to 48 months as per the local laws for alleged manslaughter by stabbing the individual. Until the criminal case is ongoing, the winger will remain out of contention for his national squad as well, as mentioned by the Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal. He last appeared for the Dutch in a 2-0 defeat against Czech Republic in the Euro this year.
Promes made a 8.3 million euros move from Ajax Amsterdam to Spartak Moscow in August 2020. He had spent time with Spartak previously from 2014 to 2018, where he made a name for himself as one of the next big things in Dutch football. He managed to muster 66 goals in 135 games for the Russian club, before Ajax came calling for their Youth academy prospect.
After the impressive spell, he had a troublesome time in La Liga with Sevilla, and after just one season in Spain, he returned to Amsterdam to re-join the Ajax unit. However, playing time has been difficult to come by for the forward at the home of Netherlands’ most successful team.
This prompted a move to the Russian Premier League again to restore parity, and moved there this summer. He has been impressive thus far this season, scoring 7 times across all competitions in 20 appearances.
Although the Dutch unit did not have the best of time, Promes completed 50 appearances for Netherlands in the Euro. He also appeared regularly in the FIFA World Cup 2022 European Qualifiers for the Dutch, before the case became public and the manager decided to keep him away.
