Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been under immense pressure since the start of this season to provide the dream results fans have been hoping for, but as it stands, he has not managed to do so. Although they keep themselves in the Champions League round of 16 hunt by the scraps, they are struggling in the league, with fans demanding his sack immediately.
Plenty of names have been doing the rounds ever since to take up the big job in Greater Manchester. The likes of Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers have been high up on the radar, whilst people like Eric Ten Haag, Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino have remained on the peripheral edge of the rumours.
A new name has emerged in this grand scheme of things, one that isn’t unfamiliar to being linked with the United job. Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone, who has been at the club since 2011, has won two La Liga titles and took the club to the Champions League final twice, losing to Real Madrid on both occasions. He also won the Europa League twice in the last 10 years.
According to The Independent, the Argentine is a long-favoured, well-appreciated man among the United hierarchy. The 51-year-old, however, will not be lured away from the Atletico project that easily. With Real and Barcelona not being at their best, he has a chance to pick up his 3rd league crown, and could contend for the Champions League once again.
Having signed Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer window, United are expected to challenge for the title, but they have been left exposed defensively on plenty of occasions. They maintained just one clean sheet this season, which came against Wolves.
Their horrendous 5-0 loss to arch-rivals Liverpool at home proved to burn the threshold of tolerance among United faithful. Their patience to trust in the process has diminished, and all they want now is progress, having spent over half a billion pounds across departments.
