In a shocking turn of events, the Haryana Police arrested former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh in a case related to an allegation on Yuvraj for making casteist remarks during an Instagram chat last year against Yuzvendra Chahal.
However, the police confirmed that Singh was soon released on bail after being arrested in compliance with the order from the High Court following the accusation of making inappropriate comments for a fellow cricketer.
“We only made a formal arrest and he was released on bail in compliance of the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court,”
PTI quoted Nitika Gahlaut, the SP (Hansi), as saying through a phone conversation with them.
Vinod Shankar, DSP (Hansi), added:
“Yuvraj Singh came to Hansi on Saturday and we made a formal arrest. He was released on bail bond after a few hours.”
As reported by PTI, the High Court had noted that the Haryana Police is seeking a “formal arrest” of Yuvraj but also added that once the cricketer joins the probe with the investigating officer, upon a brief arrest he will be released on “interim bail” after furnishing for the bail and surety bonds.
The HC listened to a plea from Yuvraj, who sought to quash the FIR that was filed against him in the case earlier in 2021. The FIR was made as per sections of the IPC and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, following an official complaint by a lawyer named Rajat Kalsan in Hisar.
In his complaint, Kalsan had argued that Yuvraj’s inappropriate remarks had a deeply sentimental effect on the Dalit community since a very large section of fans and viewers had watched that Instagram chat.
Immediately after his remarks triggered a controversy, Yuvraj made a tweet over his official Twitter handle last year, making it clear that he regrets his words.
Yuvraj initially said he was “misunderstood” and that the whole issue was “unwarranted” but then offered his apologies stating he “express regret” for “unintentionally” hurting people’s sentiments.
