Currently 19th in the Premier League, the Magpies are expected to spend significantly on improving their squad over the next two transfer windows. 90min reports that the Newcastle board are planning to raid some of the Premier League elites for transfers.
The eyes of the football fraternity are firmly on Newcastle United, who were recently bought by a consortium of investors, with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund the leading shareholder. The combined wealth of the consortium makes them the richest owners in club football, and by association, Newcastle, the richest club in the world.
As per the report, United are keen on signing Chelsea pair Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Both Englishmen have slipped down the pecking order at the club and were unable to secure either loan or permanent moves last summer. Despite featuring prominently for the Blues in recent weeks, the players’ future remains up in the air – an opportunity Newcastle could pounce upon.
Similarly, the Magpies are interested in signing Jesse Lingard from Manchester United. The England international rekindled his career in the latter half of the previous season on loan at West Ham United and was subsequently rewarded with a spot in the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team.
However, the 28-year-old international has featured fleetingly, and mostly, from the bench. Newcastle are also keen on veteran Nemanja Matic and centre-back Phil Jones – both of whom find themselves on the periphery of the first team at Old Trafford.
Burnley’s James Tarkowski also continues to be linked strongly with a switch to Tyneside as his current contract runs out in June 2022. Furthermore, the Englishman has rebuffed Burnley’s attempts to renew his deal and could force the club to sell him in January for a cut-price fee – unless they are prepared to lose him for free, six months later.
