Manchester United have been rocked with a couple of significant injuries at the heart of their defence as both first-chocie centre-back will miss Saturday’s game at King Power Stadium.
United captain Harry Maguire will soon return to training but is ruled out for the weekend’s Premier League fixture. The England international, who has missed the last two games, has been recovering from his injury during the international break.
Summer signing Raphael Varane suffered a groin injury while on international duty for France. The former Real Madrid defender is unlikely to feature in the next three matches (against Leicester, Atalanta, and Liverpool).
Maguire might return to full fitness before the Frenchman, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could easily be without his two first-choice center backs for the subsequent three encounters.
“I am progressing as I should be. It is obviously a frustrating injury for me to get, but I am progressing, and I will be back on the pitch soon,”
he said on the Manchester United official website.
While Varane has looked solid for United so far, the 20-time league winners have found it hard keeping clean sheets. With the absence of both Maguire and Varane, things will only get more complex.
Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are the next best central defenders in the Solskjaer’s roster. With important Premier League matches against the Foxes and bitter rivals Liverpool in the next ten days, the Norwegian will hope for the best when it comes to defending.
The UEFA Champions League match against Atalanta can also be a tricky ride. At the time of writing, Manchester United is third in what seemed like a pretty easy group.
