In an virtual interaction session conducted by India Cements, Chennai Super Kings captain said that he’s hopeful of playing his farewell match at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This could very well mean that he’s planning to play one more IPL season.
For the last couple of years, there have been speculations about MS Dhoni’s future in the IPL. Only for the Chennai Super Kings skipper to squash them. Remember the famous ‘Definitely not’ phrase when Danny Morrison asked him in the last league game of the 2020 edition if it will be his last match. Not only did Dhoni stay true to his words, he also took the Super Kings into the playoffs in the 2021 edition.
Similar speculations were starting to spread around as the fans and experts felt this could be Dhoni’s last Premier League season, considering his abysmal form with the bat. But the three-time IPL winning captain has dropped a major hint that he could indeed play for one more year.
“You will still get that opportunity to bid me farewell. Hopefully, you will come to see me in Chennai where I will play my last game and I can meet all my fans,”
the 40-year-old stated.
India Cements, the owners of Chennai Super Kings, have also said that they are going to retain Dhoni ahead of the mega auction.
“We are going to retain MS Dhoni. He will be there next year and who knows a few more years too.”
After a forgettable season last year, where they failed to make the playoffs for the first time, Dhoni’s CSK made a terrific comeback this season, winning nine out of 13 matches.
The former Indian skipper, however, has been in miserable form, scoring 84 runs at an average of 14 while striking at only 97.7. While his leadership keeps getting hailed, Dhoni has attracted criticism for his batting performance. Only time will tell how long he can keep going.
