A lower back injury has ruled England all-rounder out of the remainder of the Inidan Premier League season and T20 World Cup, scheduled for later in September. His brother younger Tom Curran has been named as his replacement, with Reece Topley being added as travelling reserve.
“Results of the scan revealed the injury. He will fly back to the UK in the next couple of days and will have further scans and a full review later this week from the ECB’s medical team.”
an official statement from the ECB read.
The Curran brothers have not had a huge role to play in the UAE leg of the Premier League as Sam played just two games for the Chennai Super Kings before suffering the injury, and Tom is yet to make an appearance for the Delhi Capitals, who cemented their place in the top two spots in the second leg of the IPL.
The members of the England squad not currently in the IPL arrived at Muscat on Tuesday and will train in Oman capital for 10 days before travelling to Dubai on October 16, where they will link up with the other members of the squad.
While Sam Curran isn’t a regular member in the starting XI, he is an all-rounder who would have been expected to step up to the squad in the absence of Ben Stokes, who is currently on a mental health break.
With Sam ruled out, England might have to rely on Moeen Ali and David Willey to balance the side in the mega ICC event starting on October 17.
