Delhi Capitals’ promising Indian quick highlighted his head coach’s influence on the team and him. Avesh said Ponting, when he speaks of the mental side of the game, gives him and other players “goosebumps.”
Ponting has been with the Delhi franchise since the start of the 2018 IPL season, and since then, the team has only moved forward. The Capitals made the playoffs for the 2019 season after a seven-year drought and enjoyed their best result in IPL history last year when they reached the final.
In the IPL 2021 as well, DC have been one of the top-table sides so far, winning eight and losing only three of their eleven games. For Avesh, however, it is not just about the results, but the game expertise that the legendary Australian has had to offer.
“It is my fourth year with Ricky sir and I can say that he has been a legendary player and an equally great coach,”
“He talks about the mental aspect of the game. Just listening to him in the dressing room gives me goosebumps. He has an open mind and you can discuss anything you wish with him.”
the uncapped Indian pacer was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
On his bowling, Avesh said he has practised the “yorkers” and hard lengths in the nets so as to continue in the upward curve for the season. Avesh has grabbed the opportunity with both hands to be the only Indian pacer in DC’s fast-bowling attack, where Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje are indispensable.
The 24-year-old has taken 18 wickets from his 11 outings with an average of 16.66 and economy rate of 7.31. In his overall IPL career, Avesh has picked up 23 scalps in 20 games at just over eight runs per over.
The tall right-arm quick from Madhya Pradesh has been on the selectors’ radar for a while now and could well be in the middle of a breakthrough IPL season which results in an India cap not too long from now.
