Manchester United manager was irritated after Bruno Fernandes missed the opportunity to level matters in the Premier League fixture against Aston Villa (0-1).
Dean Smith’s men managed to find a late winner through a header from defender Kortney Hause and sealed a great win for the Villans at Old Trafford. However, United had a chance to level the scoreline and earn a point from the Premier League fixture. Hause turned hero to villain in a few minutes as he handled the ball in the penalty area awarding United a late penalty.
Bruno Fernandes stepped up to take the penalty, but it was a delayed spot-kick as both set of players surrounded the match referee, raising protests against the decision. Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was also seen chirping something into Fernandes’ ears. The Portugal international did not take his famous usual skip and sailed it over the bar.
Solskjaer complained that the Villa players put off Fernandes before he went ahead to take the spot-kick:
“First of all, the way they get around the penalty spot, around Bruno and all that, that’s not to my liking, but I do understand it, it shouldn’t be that way.
“Bruno is normally very good in those positions and unfortunately just missed this one. It doesn’t get into Bruno’s head, he’s strong mentally and he’ll step forward again.”
Fernandes has been exceptional from the spot for Manchester United. He has taken 23 spot kicks for the Red Devils till now and has only missed twice.
However, this defeat will be a big blow for Solskjaer’s men as they wanted to reinforce their position at the top of the table. But with Chelsea’s defeat against Manchester City, things look more complicated at the top of the table. Liverpool will have a chance to reach the summit of the points table if they win their match against Brentford.
