The speedster achieved the first major milestone of his career in the whites in only his 24th outing. His 100th scalp arrived on Day 5 of the fourth Test against England at The Oval, where he dismissed Ollie Pope with a peach to rewrite the history books.
The 65th over of the England second-innings saw Bumrah disturb the off and middle stump against Pope with a sharp, accurate incoming delivery. By the time the batsman could get his bat down, the ball from Bumrah had already sneaked through the gap and went on to disturb the furniture.
Kapil, the former India captain and great all-rounder, took the 100th scalp in his 25th Test match. Irfan Pathan (28 Tests), Mohammed Shami (29), Javagal Srinath (30) and Ishant Sharma (33) are few of the other prominent names part of the list.
With the scalp of Pope, Bumrah added to his tally for the game and was rewarded for some highly disciplined fast bowling. The ace quick had kept things tight from an end for most parts of the pre-lunch session and was now finally reaping the dividends.
In his very next over, Bumrah got Jonny Bairstow out with an unplayable yorker. The wicketkeeper-batsman had no answer to the full-pitch ball delivered with pinpoint accuracy by the Indian speedster.
Bumrah’s spell post-lunch pushed India towards a memorable win at The Oval, only their second in the game’s history at the iconic venue.
The unorthodox right-arm quick has now taken 101 Test wickets to his name at an average of only 22.79. His tally including as many six five-wicket hauls.
