Chelsea star Christian Pulisic is among those hoping to represent their country at the Olympics in Tokyo this summer. However, he reiterates that the decision may not be in his hands.
Chelsea attacker Christian Pulisic has revealed his hopes of playing for the United States in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. The youngster will be available for selection to the team under the Olympics’ age restrictions. However, the decision to release him for international duty in the middle of the season remains with his club.
The Olympics is of course a massive honour to play in, and to represent your country in an Olympics would be amazing,
Pulisic said ahead of USA’s game against Jamaica.
It is something I’ve thought about and that I have wanted to play in. Obviously, I can’t control exactly what goes on and what is best for me at the time and the team at the time, I can’t say. But it is something that I would like to play in.
USA coach Gregg Berhalter remains wary of clubs’ intention not to release their best players midway through the season.
If we’re in a perfect world, there is nothing more I would like to see than our best group competing in the Olympics — it would be amazing. I’m just not sure that’s going to happen,
he said.
I’m not sure the clubs are going to allow the players to go.
USA are due to play Jamaica in a friendly in Austria today, March 25. They are also scheduled to play Northern Ireland in Belfast in another friendly match before the international window is over. Meanwhile, the USA U-23 team, which is currently competing in the Olympic qualifiers lost their latest match against rivals Mexico 1-0.
Despite their loss, US joined Mexico in the semi-finals. They will have to wait to know who they are playing in the semis. However, a win against their next opponents could confirm their place in Tokyo for the final tournament.
