The Blues striker has played down comparisons with five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Lukaku, who could earn his 100th cap for Belgium in today’s 2022 World Cup qualification match against the Czech Republic, has scored 66 times internationally. Ronaldo, meanwhile, became the top goalscorer earlier this week, when he netted his 110th and 111th goals for Portugal in a comeback win against Ireland (2-1).
Both players won a title each and the Serie A MVP award in two of the last three seasons. Eventually, both players left Italy to return to England, where they will resume their careers with Chelsea and Manchester United, respectively.
Lukaku and Ronaldo were engaged in the battle for the Italian crown over the last two years – the former as the spearhead of Inter Milan meanwhile the latter Juventus‘ talisman.
Lukaku claims that comparisons with Ronaldo are baseless. He then proceeded to rank his counterpart among the three best players in the history of football, although stopped short of revealing where on the podium he stood.
“I was lucky enough to play against him in Italy and now that he’s back in the Premier League, it’s all good for English football.
“As for the rest, comparing statistics and all that, it’s useless.”
the Belgium international said in the press-conference.
While Lukaku has already opened his account for the season – scoring in a 2-0 win against Arsenal – Ronaldo is yet to make his second Manchester United debut.
In all likelihood, the Portugal international will be handed the same when the Red Devils play Newcastle United (September 11) at the end of the international break.
