Welsh star Gareth Bale joined former club Tottenham ahead of the 2020/21 campaign to add depth to Jose Mourinho’s squad. The wing-man has confirmed that he intends to return to parent club Real Madrid after the conclusion of the current campaign.
Gareth Bale surprised Tottenham fans as he confirmed his plans to return to Santiago Bernabeu after the conclusion of the current season. The Wales international was spending the campaign back with his former club but revealed he did so to play football permanently.
I think the main reason I came to Spurs this year was to play football first and foremost but going into the Euros, I want to be match-fit,
Bale told the media in a news conference.
The original plan was to do a season at Spurs and after the Euros still have a year left at Real Madrid. My plan is to go back and that’s as far I’ve planned to be honest.
Bale left Tottenham back in 2013 to sign for Real Madrid for a world-record fee. He enjoyed initial success with Los Blancos, forming a devastating attacking trident with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. The trio won four UEFA Champions League titles together at the club.
The Welshman has been used sporadically by manager Zinedine Zidane in recent seasons and reportedly came close to departing for the Chinese Super League. Zidane himself appeared to confirm the impending move during Los Blancos’ pre-season tour. However, an apparent deal with CSL side Jiangsu Suning was reportedly called off by the club shortly after, with the player remaining at Santiago Bernabeu for the 2019/20 season.
The winger appeared just 20 times for Real Madrid in the 2019/20 campaign. With the Euros on the horizon, he left the club on a temporary basis to return to Tottenham. He has played 25 times across all competitions this season and scored ten goals – including five in the Premier League.
He is currently with the Wales National Team, with the Dragons set to face Belgium in the 2022 World Cup qualification stage on March 24.
