India skipper Sunil Chhetri will miss the upcoming international matches due to COVID complications. As such, head coach Igor Stimac has asked his team to step up and fill the gap in Chhetri’s absence.
Indian National Team captain, Suni Chhetri, will miss the upcoming matches against Oman and United Arab Emirates due to COVID complications. The striker has not been called up to the national camp in Dubai by head coach Igor Stimac. Stimac, in turn, has asked his team to put in a joint effort and do ‘a bit more’ in Chhetri’s absence.
You always miss a player like Sunil. He has an all-around game and influences the team as the captain, both on and off the field. The youngsters idolise him. I told the players that we need a team effort to replace him like we did against Thailand (King’s Cup) and Qatar (FIFA World Cup AFC qualifiers). Each one will have to do a bit more on the field,
Stimac told the Times of India.
The player himself gave his full support to the national team. He stated his delight at the team facing ‘top opponents’. He also hoped that the team makes the most out of the chances provided to them and learn from the experience.
I am both excited and grateful about the two friendlies which the Blue Tigers will play this month against some quality opposition which only betters the anticipation. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to be a part of it,
Chhetri told the AIFF website.
It pleases me more than I can tell. I’ve always been thinking about how we need to better ourselves in Asia and that can happen only when we come up against top opponents. Oman and UAE most certainly fit that bill.
I hope we, as a team, make the most of this chance, give a good account of ourselves and most importantly, learn from the experience.
India will face Oman on March 25 in Dubai before taking on United Arab Emirates on March 29. Both games will be held in Dubai.0 comments
