Reports claim that the Red Devils will pay the veteran David De Gea to leave the club to make space for the youngster Dean Henderson.
According to a report by the Mirror, Manchester United will pay David De Gea to leave the club this summer. The Spanish goalkeeper is on a massive contract at the moment and is among the league’s highest weekly earners. However, he is expected to become surplus to requirements in the summer, with the club putting their trust in emerging star Dean Henderson.
United currently have five goalkeepers on their books – a situation which they are looking to rectify in the upcoming transfer window. Along with De Gea and Henderson, the Red Devils also pay Joel Pereira, Lee Grant, and Sergio Romero. The latter is reportedly also on the verge of leaving the club after he was demoted from the back-up goalkeeper position to make space for Henderson.
Henderson, who is 24-years-old, is seen as the future of the club. He was recently given an extended run of games in the starting eleven, with De Gea unavailable for personal reasons. The Englishman performed well in the veteran custodian’s place, as United strengthened their position in the Premier League top-four while also progressing in the UEFA Europa League.
When quizzed about his team’s peculiar goalkeeping crisis, Solskjaer confirmed that he intends to rotate between the two players.
I have the great option of two top goalkeepers,
he said.
It’s a pleasure to have them around here. We hopefully have nine plus five games to go – we want to go all the way in the Europa League as well. I’m sure you’ll see both of them playing in goal for us.
What Manchester United decide to do with the goalkeeping situation after the current season remains a mystery. However, the Mirror report claims that the club has already decided upon Henderson as the first-choice goalkeeper for future seasons. Furthermore, they will have to pay off De Gea’s massive £350,000-a-week contract to get him off their books. The Spaniard still has two years remaining on his deal at the club, which he renewed last year, and will be eligible to receive a whopping £36.4 million payment, should the club decide to break it before expiry.
Meanwhile, De Gea won’t be alone in leaving the team. United are also said to be working on methods to offload some of their reserve goalkeepers – such as Grant and Pereira. The club is currently spending slightly more than half a million per week on that one position in terms of wages.
Manchester United are expected to be heavily involved in buying players in the upcoming transfer window. The Red Devils are rumoured to be interested in Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho – both players they have tried to sign in the past.
Solskjaer missed out on a reunion with Haaland a year-and-a-half ago. The two compatriots were together at Molde before Haaland went to RB Salzburg and Solskjaer joined Manchester United. The young striker then switched teams again, but instead of reuniting with his former boss at Old Trafford, he went to Borussia Dortmund. He is currently the most coveted player in all of Europe.
Haaland is teammates with Sancho at Dortmund – another player United tried to sign recently. However, the club failed to meet Dortmund’s demands, and the player stayed in Germany. He is rumoured to be a target of theirs for the second successive summer window.
