Manchester United are determined to build on their second-place finish in the last season and reclaim the Premier League title for the first time since 2013, next term.
The Red Devils have made a bright start to the summer window as the market approaches the busier part. The former Premier League champions have already secured the signings of Tom Heaton and Jadon Sancho with ease and are now moving on to their next target in Real Madrid star Raphael Varane.
United’s defense was one of the major talking points of the last season as they conceded quite a number of goals that should not have gone in, in the first place. While Harry Maguire proved his worth and class, it can be argued that he needs an able partner.
For that, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified Real Madrid ace as the solution to his backline issues.
Varane, 28, has been an integral part of Rea and has got only one year left in his contract. Having spent a decade at the club, Varane has won everything with Real that there is to be won and is now eager to take on a new challenge. The Premier League and United have attracted his attention.
Real Madrid understand that they will have to sell Varane this summer as they cannot let a player of Varane’s class and caliber leave for free. Having said that, the Frenchman himself is respecting the club and is not forcing the issue.
Express (via The Football Terrace podcast) understands that Manchester United are extremely close to sealing the deal for Varane. It is believed that a sum in the range of £45 million would be required to land the highly-rated defender.
Varane is said to have reached a verbal agreement with the Red Devils on personal terms but will only put pen to paper when the clubs agree on a price, respecting Real Madrid.
Varane is certainly not in a hurry to make a move and Manchester United can afford to take their time as they are leading the race to sign the 28-year-old.
