In his first-ever interview since joining Manchester United, Raphael Varane said he is delighted to link up with compatriot Paul Pogba at Old Trafford. The former Real Madrid defender is ready to win trophies with Manchester United.
Varane’s arrival at Old Trafford has instantly lifted the entire team as they started the Premier League season with a thumping 5-1 win over Leeds United. The Frenchman is eager to play with Paul Pogba as the midfielder came up with four assists in the first match.
In his first interview as a United player, Varane lauded Pogba:
“I’m very happy. I’ve known him for a very long time, we started together with the French national team and he’s a great player. I think he’s ambitious and so am I, so we are ready to work hard and to do all we can to win trophies.”
The duo guided Les Blues to the final of the Euros 2016 final before helping Didier Deschamps’ men to the World Cup triumph in 2018. The former Real player is hopeful that he will be able to end Manchester United’s four-year trophy drought.
The 28-year-old centre back has won five Champions League titles with Los Blancos and shared his decision to leave the Spanish capital. The Frenchman felt that it was about time to change a few things in his career after a 10-year long association with the Madrid side.
“I think it was a good moment because of a lot of things, but I think the most important one is it’s a new challenge and it’s a big motivation to start in a new league in a big club like Manchester United,” he explained.
“This opportunity was amazing for me, so I chose this change for me and my family. They have come with me. You feel when things are a good moment and this was the right moment.”
Varane shared how he is proud to be a part of the Manchester United family as he mentioned the names of several former players who have had an impact on him.
“Of course, [Nemanja] Vidic and [Rio] Ferdinand were legends,”
“I remember players like Cristiano [Ronaldo], [Ryan] Giggs and [David] Beckham also. They are legends and I’m very proud to be part of this family.”
he said.
Apart from signing Varane, Manchester United have also signed their long-term target Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund. The Red Devils are still open for more arrivals this summer as they search for another midfielder. With the signings in place, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his men are looking to challenge teams like Manchester City and Chelsea for the Premier League title.
The Red Devils finished second in the Premier League last season only behind champions Manchester City and also lost out in the Europa League finals on penalties against Villareal.
