Frank Lampard was relieved of his duties as the Chelsea head coach in January 2021. The club great had been on the job since July 4. Midfielder Jorginho thinks that the job might have come too early for the Englishman.
The Blues legend was handed the reigns of the senior team following a season of moderate success with Derby County. As a result, Jorginho believes that Lampard skipped a few important steps and came directly into a difficult situation.
“Look, I’ll be really sincere here on Lampard. I believe, given he was a legend at the club, he skipped some steps necessary for learning before moving to a big club,”
“He came to a club where he is a legend, without having experience at other clubs. I think he came too soon, skipped a few steps ahead and wasn’t ready for a job at this level, to be honest.”
he told ESPN Brazil.
Chelsea decided to appoint Lampard as the head coach in 2019 after former coach Maurizio Sarri left for Juventus. The Italian endured a difficult season in London but finished with a UEFA Europa League winner’s medal. Furthermore, he had led The Blues to the Champions League qualification for the subsequent season, both through the league and by winning a European trophy.
Nevertheless, when the opportunity to part ways with Chelsea arrived, Sarri did not hesitate. The tactician returned to Italy to take over Juventus while the Blues turned to Lampard. The Englishman’s first season in charge of the club was difficult, partly due to a FIFA-issued transfer ban. Despite that, he managed to steer the team into a top-four finish and qualified for the Champions League again.
The 2020/21 season started positively for Chelsea, with the team even leading the league at times. However, results faltered during a lengthy mid-season run, and the team slid down the table. They were as low as ninth when the club hierarchy decided to sack Lampard and appoint Thomas Tuchel as the first team head coach. Chelsea have since climbed to fourth in the table and are through to the FA Cup Final and the UEFA Champions League semi-final.
