In the absence of Aaron Finch, Matthew Wade termed the team’s performance in Bangladesh as “not good enough for an Australian team” and asserted that batters need to find a way to score in these conditions.
Australia’s shambolic away tours in the last one month to West Indies and Bangladesh concluded yesterday with them getting bowled out for their lowest T20I score ever of 62.
Batters from both teams struggled to score runs in the T20I series, but the Aussies even more so. The hosts have scored just about enough runs in four of the five matches to secure their first-ever series victory over Australia. Wade noted how the spin had caused problems against the Windies too, where they had lost by 4-1.
“There’s not a lot of positives to take out of it, to get beaten in the fashion we did, especially tonight, was not good enough from an Australian cricket team regardless of the personnel we’ve got here. The reality is we need to get better at spin, myself included,”
Wade said.
Wade added that the conditions Australia faced in Bangladesh were easily the most challenging he has ever seen. He also stated that this experience will make them better players. He also believes that the conditions at the T20 World Cup in the UAE will not be as extreme:
“I do not blame the young players one bit. Myself, Moises, Dan Christian, we are all experienced players and we needed to do better. Those [younger] guys got the opportunity to experience these conditions.”
Australia’s final stop leading into the WC is yet to be confirmed with the talks of a potential series against West Indies and Afghanistan in Sri Lanka going on. The series would overlap with the second phase of the IPL, but Wade expects that all the players who opted out of recent tours due to bio-bubble fatigue will be available for selection.
