Kolkata Knight Riders skipper and head coach could be under massive scrutiny for their post social media posts. The duo could be taken to task by their IPL franchise after the re-emergence of posts that had them mocking the Indian accent.
The tweets are from 2018, where during a social-media exchange, Eoin Morgan, alongside fellow England player Jos Buttler, engaged in a conversation where they deliberately used the word ‘Sir’ several times to ridicule their Indians fans. Brendon McCullum joined the duo later and did the same.
While the posts have now been deleted from the official accounts of those who were involved, the screenshots of the entire exchange are still available to be seen over Twitter.
“We don’t know enough about it to comment at this time. Let’s wait for the process to be completed to get all the facts before we jump to any conclusions. Just to reiterate, the Knight Riders organisation has ‘zero tolerance’ for any sort of discrimination,”
KKR CEO Venky Mysore told Cricbuzz.
Mysore indicated that an action can be taken against them in line with the ECB’s reaction to Ollie Robinson’s comments made eight years ago, which were brought to light just after he became an England Test cricketer.
The ECB suspended the bowler for an indefinite period for his inappropriate remarks despite him having apologised publicly. The England board is now all set to investigate other players’ social media history as well and bring them under the scanner for their words.
“Given the concerns which have been raised are clearly now broader than a single case, the ECB will discuss how we deal with issues over historical social media material in a timely and appropriate manner. Each case will be considered on an individual basis, looking at all the facts,”
an ECB spokesperson was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Cricbuzz reached out to multiple BCCI office-bearers and IPL chairman Brijesh Patel regarding the case, “but there was no immediate response”. The report further mentioned that neither Morgan and Buttler nor their agents responded when they were messaged for their views. McCullum also didn’t respond. It remains to be seen what course of action would KKR take, if they do take one, ahead of the UAE leg of IPL 2021.
