Donny van de Beek was one of the talking points last term as the Dutch midfielder made his way to England last summer from Ajax. The 24-year-old, however, spent most of his time on the bench while making an odd appearance every now and then.
It seems that his nightmare at Old Trafford could finally come to an end as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks set to cut him loose this summer.
Daily Express reports that Barcelona were offered van de Beek recently. The Blaugrana were linked with such a move last summer. The former La Liga champions however have been cash-strapped and an outright bid for the 24-year-old would be impossible for them to pull off.
Consequently, the Catalan giants tried including Samuel Umtiti in the deal but it was shot down by the Red Devils, who aren’t interested in a deal for the Frenchman.
The former La Liga champions are looking to offload some of the high earners in the Barca ranks as they look to register their new signings. Umtiti has fallen down the pecking order owing to recurrent injuries and a drop in form. The 27-year-old’s massive wages are a stumbling block for the sides that are interested in him, and thus Barcelona is looking to include him in swap deals.
It is understood that Umtiti is valued at £10 million, and he earns around £11 million/season. United are in the market for a defender as they look to push for the Premier League title after failing to win it since 2013.
Consequently, the Red Devils are said to be leading the race to sign Real Madrid ace Raphael Varane and hope to complete the signing in the coming days.
