The BCCI and CSK announced cash rewards to appreciate the achievements of India’s medal winners at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
On Saturday, Chopra pulled off arguably the greatest moment in Indian sporting history when he clocked a 87.58m throw to win Olympic gold. Afterwards, the BCCI have decided to felicitate every Indian medal winner at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with cash rewards. Rs. 1 crore has been allocated solely for Chopra.
The 23-year old Javelin thrower created history at the biggest sporting event as he became only the second Indian to win a Gold medal at the Olympics and the first Indian athlete ever to do so in the ‘track and field competitions.
The BCCI has also allocated Rs. 50 Lakhs each for the silver medalists Mirabai Chanu and Ravi Kumar Dahiya. Chanu won India’s first-ever Olympic medal in weight-lifting, whereas Dahiya became only the second Indian to win a silver medal in wrestling.
Bronze medalists – boxer Lovlina Borgohain, shuttler PV Sindhu and wrestler Bajrang Punia – will receive Rs. 25 lakhs each from the BCCI. The bronze-medal winning Indian men’s hockey team, who created history by winning their first Olympic medal in 41 years, will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1.25 crores.
“Our athletes have made the country proud by finishing on the podium at Tokyo Olympics 2020. The BCCI acknowledges their stellar efforts, and we are delighted to announce cash prizes for the medalists,”
BCCI secretary Jay Shah tweeted.
IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings will also honour the gold medalist with Rs. 1 crore cash reward for his stellar achievement. CSK have also decided to create a special jersey with the number 8758 as a mark of respect after Chopra’s throw of 87.58m.
Following a hard-fought 16 days in Tokyo, Team India finished with their highest ever medal tally in the Olympics with 7 medals including one gold, two silvers and four bronze medals.
