The Red Devils finished as runners up last season as Manchester City won the title. But since then, United have made some great signings and are looking like one of the title contenders. Their manager is confident that the team will contend for the Premier League title this season.
With the arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane at Old Trafford, United are a much better team this time around. They will look to bridge the gap between reigning champions, City. Therefore the Norwegian tactician does not see any reason why United cannot challenge for the Premier League title.
“I’d rather be an optimist and be wrong than a pessimist and be right. Of course these boys can [win the title], with a maximum effort and maximum sacrifice.
“It feels like this season coming up is one of the strongest Premier League seasons. It’s been [Manchester] City and Liverpool fighting it out for a while but us and Chelsea have spent well and should look at ourselves as potential challengers.”
said Solskjaer.
The Norwegian feels that it is of prime importance to start the league on a high. United were agonisingly close to winning silverware last season when they lost the Europa League finals on penalties against Villareal.
Apart from Sancho and Varane, the Red Devils are still looking to sign a new centre midfielder and are also looking to rope in a new striker. But for now, they will hope that Marcus Rashford will recover soon from his injury. But Solskjaer will feel that players like Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani will step up in the absence of the England international.
United’s summer transfer activity have shown that they are all set to contend for the title in the upcoming season. However, the Cityzens have also decided to fill up the gaps in their roster as they roped in Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish in a British record fee (£100m).
Both the Manchester clubs may sign a couple more players this summer. Chelsea are looking like a top contender as well as Thomas Tuchel will aim to win the Premier League after already clinching the Champions League last season. Then there is Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who will also be in the mix. So it promises to be an exciting season ahead in the Premier League.
